Abstracted Memories
Travel rarely lingers in the mind as a clean sequence of photographs. Instead, physical places dissolve over time into something far more fluid: the warmth of afternoon stone underhand, salt-stung air, an abrupt slant of shadow across water, or the intense, almost theatrical hue of coastal rock against the sea. The edges soften, the strict geometry of landmarks falls away, and what remains is an emotional residue—sensory fragments gathered, layered, and reassembled by time.
This series, born from a summer in Lagos, explores that precise territory of recall. Rather than rendering the cliffs, grottoes, and tides as literal scenery, these works treat memory as an active, geological process. Thick, tactile coats of ochre, burnt terracotta, and deep mineral reds collide with shocks of turquoise and sea mist, echoing the way distinct sensory impressions resurface through sedimented thought. Every scraped texture, veiled passage, and burst of pigment mirrors the unpredictability of remembrance: some moments submerged and obscured, others breaking fiercely to the surface with luminous clarity.
By translating geography into atmosphere and emotion, the series invites the viewer into that private, reconstructive space where a journey stops being a map of coordinates and becomes a state of mind.
